- In five years, we have..
- Used hard-copy images of objects
- as a management tool
- as a tool for marketing and communications
- to support income generation
- Created digital surrogates of the objects and provided access:
- in a ‘controlled’ environment – interactives and websites
- in an ‘uncontrolled’ environment – over the network
|
|
13
|
- At the same time, we have…
- Installed systems
- A Content Management System
- A Collections Management System
- Proprietary databases
- OS upgrades
- Created content
- Interactives and learning resources
- Web copy and hard print copy
- Marketing material
- Academic research
|
|
14
|
- The issues…
- Focus of our collections information has changed radically from
management to publishing
- We have a new commercial business model which places emphasis on
management of rights to drive income
- Our market is expanding to include a distributed networked environment
where traditional models of control are untenable
- There are no established models of sustainability in this context
- We are expected to make sophisticated use of legislation without direct
access to legal advice
|
|
15
|
- What we can do for ourselves…
- Take copyright seriously
- Train staff in basic copyright & licensing
- Consider copyright issues in project meetings & planning
- Ensure that Rights Management is included in documentation
- Implement digital watermarking to provide a
measure of protection for images
- Investigate Creative Commons as a means of
enabling use of our content in different contexts
|
|
16
|
- What someone should do nationally…
- Establish Rights Management as a standard part of documentation practice
(SPECTRUM revised edition)
- Make it easier to clear rights for content creation
- Broker agreements with rights holders/representatives for use of images
in educational materials
- In the absence of legal advice, provide clear guidance on copyright
implications of planned activity
- Provide simple template forms to help us address standard issues
- Bring together and publish case studies of museums engaging with
copyright & licensing on a commercial basis
|
|
17
|
- Conclusions
- Our ability to manage our Intellectual Property and commercialise our
rights is central to our development as a museum over the next 5 years.
- A creative and informed approach to licensing is the best way to take
advantage of the opportunities in copyright legislation.
- Copyright and licensing are among the most important issues confronting
museums in the development of the knowledge economy.
